One of the earliest constitutions in the world was authored by Pylyp Orlyk. On April 5, 1710, he was elected Hetman (leader) of the Zaporozhian Sich. On the same day, Pylyp Orlyk proclaimed the "Constitution of Rights and Freedoms of the Zaporozhian Sich." By comparison, the United States adopted its corresponding document in 1787, and France in 1791.
